How to Perform Well as an interpreter

Interpreting can be a very stressful job. It comes with a huge responsibility as the gravity of communication lies on the interpreter’s shoulders.

Very often at stake is someone’s health, job, freedom or housing and financial situation. Therefore, being aware of the significance of my role as an interpreter, I am always 100% focused on communicating exactly the same ideas that have been uttered by the speakers. Concentration during the interpreting itself is one thing but equally important is the preparation process – no matter how focused you are, you can always forget one or two crucial words. This may lead then to either mistranslating them or finding yourself in an embarrassing situation of describing the thing that is meant. Mind you, there is no time to flip through the pages of your dictionary and forget about googling anything!

In order not to allow for any underperformance, I have developed an efficient method of preparation for each interpreting assignment. This method is called GLOSSARY. Yes, glossaries have become my best friends recently and they have never let me down. With a plethora of glossaries existing in the internet, how do I pick the right one? First of all, I do not copy any ready-made lists of thousands of words and cram them overnight. What I do is prepare my own glossary for each specialisation and list there any words that I have encountered during the interpreting assignment or picked up anywhere else. My glossaries then feature all the new or easily forgotten words that I have come across, and I can effortlessly remember them by associating each word with a particular experience or situation.

Going to an interpreting assignment often feels like going to an exam as it’s all about how well you will perform. In order to make sure I excel at my job, on the day of the assignment (but not 10 minutes before I set off), I browse through my glossary and make sure I remember the terms. Again, it’s not about cramming but simply scanning the words and quickly repeating them. Obviously, interpreting is not only about knowing the appropriate terms but you have to agree that it’s in the top three of the most important aspects of the job. Smooth operation of terminology not only will give you the confidence we desperately need but it will also make an impression on the client. Over time the list becomes longer, so as you browse through your glossary knowing that you actually remember most or all of the terms you feel you are making progress.
Some interpreters believe that lucky underwear, pens or other talismans will bring them luck and confidence. For me, solid preparation and a quick repetition of key terms on the day of the assignment allows me to perform well. Ok, I also like to look impeccable and occasionally wear red lipstick for that extra boost of confidence ;-)

Red accent
It has been a while since the last time designers agreed on the most fashionable men’s colour palette. This season, no one has any doubts. A combination of navy blue (or blue) and red is a summer hit. No matter, if you match a polo shirt with a sweater or a nylon jacket, or whether you pick a striped T-shirt – navy blue and red duet is a must.
Gentlemen who shy away from bright red accents can choose less vivid colours. You can wear red as one of the elements on your T-shirt (essentially with an abundance of light blue, preferably in several shades) or you can hide it under a navy blue jacket. Those who are more courageous can decide on a luscious red sweater (or sweatshirt) contrasting with a navy blue checked shirt sticking out from it, red shorts or a totally funky boyish set – denim shorts, red shirt and luscious red smart suede shoes. Red goes well not only with navy blue. A muted red cardigan matched with a black T-shirt and light trousers will be excellent for a weekend, while red strawberry trousers worn with smart black blazer should do the trick even in official situations. Those more cautious can simply decide on red sport shoes. The important thing is to brighten up your outfit with a carmine shine.

'mortgage' for students

Niektórzy studenci, którzy wzięli pożyczkę na czesne will have to pay twice the amount borrowed, so the calculations carried out show by leading financial firms for the BBC. Their calculations indicate that student borrowers about £ 39 000 for three-year degree will pay off up to £ 1983 000th
Loans for students are not new to the British Isles, but from 2012 the system of reimbursement changes. Under the new scheme graduates earning above £ 21 000 a year, will pay 9% of their salary for a maximum period of 30 years. In the opinion of the Minister of Higher Education, the new rules are fairer than the old ones. According to him, lower installments, but extended for a longer period of time are "less onerous" than the higher installments paid within a shorter period of time.
change student loan repayment scheme linked to an increase in tuition fees. Since 2012 . Universities will be able to claim up to £ 9,000 per year of study. As part of the loan, the government pay the full amount of tuition fees, then a graduate will be required to repay that amount if his / her annual earnings exceed £ 21 the 000th Students will also be able to take out a loan for the maintenance of between £ 3,575 to £ 5,288, depending on family income. expected that interest rates will vary from an amount equal to the inflation rate equal to inflation plus 3%. The higher the earnings of a graduate, the higher interest rate. After 30 years, any unpaid amounts shall be forfeited.
Currently, students beginning their studies in 2011, can borrow £ 3375 for each year of study, and from £ 3,838 to £ 6,928 for maintenance - which, after three years will become a debt of £ 25 000 Graduates repay 9% of all income in excess of £ 15 000 - this means that at an annual salary of £ 25 000, graduate repay 9% of £ 10 000 of income under the old system, while only 9 according to the new % of £ 4000th Currently, the interest rate on student loans is equal to high inflation.
Extension repay a student loan for a longer period of time will mean lower monthly payments than at present. Ministerial Consultations on the possibility of imposing penalties on those who settle the debt faster. government ensures that the new rules, students with low pay (one quarter of all students) will pay less than the current system. Academic Youth from families with low income will receive funding, which will not have to pay. The government also promised to create a scholarship fund and will allocate for this purpose £ 150m.
John Whiting of the Chartered Institute of Taxation compared the new system for mortgages - buying education in installments. "If someone takes a large loan, there is no doubt that debt settlement will take them a long time. With accrued interest, this amount could double or even triple "- explains Whiting. contrast Professor Nick Barr from the London School of Economics believes that the new system is fair and proportionate to income. "This is a simple deduction from wages, it is week after week, month after month. Furthermore, it is precisely tailored to the individual earnings of persons, and therefore is not detrimental to them [the graduates ed.] Portfolios. It gives them the opportunity to acquire higher education "- he explains.
Changes in the amount of tuition fees apply only to England. Northern Ireland tuition fees will increase to a maximum of £ 5,750 per year. In Wales, students will experience no increase in tuition fees, and the Welsh Assembly (Welsh Assembly Government) will finance the students higher fees. In Scotland, students do not pay for college.

You want equality? Płaćcie equal contributions.

Since December 2012, men and women are equal to the premiums paid - so decided the European Court of Justice .
does not often happen, that the efforts to align the position of women and men are a concern. However, the decision of the European Court of Justice a few weeks ago, according to which insurance companies must apply the same rates for their products for both women and men unleashed a wave of unrest.
In the Court's assessment of risk based on gender is discrimination based on sex and contradicts the principles of the European Union, which is the foundation of equality. Judgement will enter into force until 21 December 2012, but its effects will touch nearly every European who will pay as a result of higher insurance premiums. So far, insurance companies were pricing their products based on differences in the number of car accidents and life expectancy for men and women. The prohibition of such a method would force insurance companies to find other ways to determine the appropriate rates. "Eventually, prices will be more accurate and better suited for an individual, but the process will be much longer and more expensive to execute" - warns Tom McPhail President, Social Policy Research at Hargreaves Lansdown.
now young men are paying the highest insurance premiums on the car, since statistically more likely to participate in road accidents. In turn, their income from pensions is higher, because their life expectancy is shorter than in women. It would seem that a ban on premium pricing based on the sex of the insured will cause rates to compensate them after appropriate reduction, but the reality is quite different. Last year, the Association of British Insurers commissioned a study which showed that, by removing the distinction between men and women would have 25 per cent increase in vehicle insurance rates for women, and according to some experts, up to 50%. Moreover, is not expected to significantly reduce insurance premiums for men - risk of accidents caused by them is still high. Major changes are in store, therefore, insurers specializing in policies for women, and although companies such as Sheilas' Wheels do not intend to maintain that the introduction of significant changes to the pricing of insurance premiums only for women will be higher.
Martin Shaw, Director chief of the Association of Financial Mutuals is more optimistic view of the consequences of the European Court's decision in his view they will be limited and temporary. " Markets car insurance and life are very competitive, so will look for new, sophisticated ways which will be based processes to determine premiums. In practice, this means that issues such as health and lifestyle will become more important than ever determinants of the rates, because insurers will be forced to seek new methods of risk assessment "- explains Shaw.
drivers already struggling with high premiums for car insurance, which in the past three years has increased by £ 650 and now amount to an average of £ 1.332. If insurers can not consider gender in assessing the risk that rising curve may be significantly accelerated.
Because of the longer life expectancy, women pay lower premiums for life insurance, but more for critical illness insurance, while men receive higher benefits pension, because statistically men live shorter. British Association of Insurers estimated that after the entry into force of the European Court of men may benefit from the 10 percent reduction in the life insurance policy, while women experience a 20 percent increase in premiums. According to experts, the future changes to such a large scale will mean losses for both men and women. Even the smallest reduction in life insurance premiums for men will be reduced by raising the price of critical illness insurance policy similarly in women, so much the opposite.
Health is one of the most important factors affecting the life insurance premiums, thus losing a few pounds or quitting smoking can save insured up to 50 percent. Moreover, insurance for the pair is cheaper than separate policies. Savings can also be found in the change in the period of insurance and its scope, it is therefore time to time to review your policy and check whether the change in our situation in life will reduce coverage.
summary, in the future years waiting for us to change the way risk assessments by insurers. Prohibition on the pricing of premiums on the basis of gender policy holder, will make the insurance companies will look for innovative solutions, which may make women in particular will experience increased premiums.

6 Ways to Get More Clients

In your career as a freelancer, you must have experienced the moment when your business slowed down and you simply got stuck and thought: “Where can I market my services, and where are any clients?” This question is even more painful during the quite times, when work is not coming in and everyone around is tweeting about how busy and tired they are.

The most important thing is not to let this downturn happen at all. But how?

1.       NETWORK, network and then network even more. The power of networking is very often underestimated; people think that it is all about going hundreds of miles to attend costly conferences and networking events. Well, not really. As much as attending and taking active part in big events is an excellent way of networking, it is definitely not the only one. Unless you live in a desert or on the North Pole, there must be some events close to where you live, so look around and ...

2.       GO LOCAL. There are plenty of networking opportunities in your area, you just don’t know about them. Consider open days, workshops, smaller networking events (yes, some are free), contact your local Chamber of Commerce and grab a local business magazine. Whatever you do, know your ground and talk to people.

Ewa at a local networking event (on the left)

3.       DON’T SELL your services at these events, this is not about pitching but rather socialising, getting valuable information, networking and most of all, having a good time. After all, who said that doing business is not fun?

4.       HAND OUT YOUR BUSINESS CARDS on every possible occasion (within reason). Last time I gave my business card to a taxi driver; he was interested in what I do so he might as well tell someone else about me. Now, what if this person actually needs my services? V’oila! The taxi driver will help his friend and hand him my business card. Now, what if I didn’t give it to the taxi driver in the first place?

5.       TALK TO PEOPLE, and again, I don’t mean pitching. Just be open-minded and ready to mention (if the circumstances are right) that you have your own business and you do this and that. Try to do it in a chatty way – no presentations at this point. Mind you, people who work from 9 to 5 and who are surrounded by other people who also have fixed working hours are fascinated   by (or at least very interested in) freelancers’ lifestyle.

6.       BE SPONTANEOUS . I get very interesting jobs purely by accident. These ‘accidents’ though were triggered by my spontaneous actions, where for example I popped into a Polish shop (in the UK) and had a chat with the owner who ‘accidentally’ was looking for a translator. Another time, I gave my business card to someone from a non-profit organisation, during the open days in October last year. Today, someone from this organisation called me and said that some of their clients need their diplomas and certificates to be translated, and she asked me whether they can refer those clients to me. Oh, yes please, thank you very much!

These are a few of the things that I have observed and experienced for the last several months. Before that, I had not been aware of the power of networking and making contacts. Now, I am more open minded, prepared (business cards in my bag and even in some pockets) and ready to make contacts, wherever I go. Clients are everywhere, not only on Proz. or TranslatorsCafe. Who knows, a (free) entry in a local directory might get you a loyal client that will stay with you for years.

will increase the price of flights - a change in the Polish aviation law

planned amendment of the air has to make changes in procedures related to security at airports. This increases the operating costs of airports, which in turn translates into higher ticket prices - flights can be more expensive by around 10 zł.
According to the draft prepared by the government changes, the Border Guard will be lightened with some of the tasks related to the protection of the airport. Her current responsibilities, such as controlling persons, baggage, mail and aircraft stores, etc. will take over airport security officers. It is likely that to ensure security at the airports will also be hired outside security companies.
"If the parliament will amend aviation law in the proposed version, I'd like to for security checks corresponded to specialized companies which deal with the protection of persons or property. In our hands, namely airport security, so pozostawiłbym. Control access, or protection inputs, outputs, patrolling the area airports, as well as access control service - told the Polish Press Agency Director of State Enterprise "Polish Airports" Michael March.
is also planned to create a specialized armed formations protection, whereby the control tasks is to implement the so-called security. registered agent. The employee will have the right professionals to carry out manual control (a search of the passenger) and view the contents of luggage. Help Border Guards will be required only when the completion of the task exceeds the skills of service airport security.
Airline Passengers should not feel the difference in the quality of services of airports, because the company hired to provide suitably qualified and eligible employees. After all, for the same standard of service, passengers will have to pay about 10 zł. Further, since undoubtedly planned by the government changes will involve carrying out a costly recruitment and training of airport security personnel, as well as the cost of hiring private companies. Part of this expenditure is supposed to be covered by the lease of premises currently occupied by Border Guards.
At the Warsaw airport from mid-January, the Border Guard celebrates not airline passengers on domestic routes - replaced it Airport Security Guard.
This controversial law change has already caused an uproar last year, mainly those objections brought in airlines and airports. With an estimated annual cost of 55 mln zł for the maintenance of special services in the country, some smaller airports may have serious problems with self-sustainability.
Government work on finding a common strategy began in February last year. However, due to an excessive number of amendments proposed during the work of the parliamentary sub-committees, the government in November 2010 decided to supplement the project. Currently, novel again went to the Sejm.

What is my and your - are you sure? Clients

Many couples who decide to live together decide on the joint purchase of an apartment or house. Often, however, those in the compound (niemałżeńskim) bring to the dwelling which held by their partner / ki and do not change ownership of that property. What's more, they both make significant investments: carry out repairs, pay bills and jointly repay the mortgage. Even in the case of the latter rarely happens to couples living together, jointly agree on (not to mention the submission of written statements) or a financial contribution of one partner who is not a property owner will have any effect on his / her right to that property. ;
In fact, such an arrangement is extremely important, because if a person is not a separation of ownership of the property may not have any interest in it, and invested in financial contribution will be lost. This follows from the fact that konkubenci are not protected by law in the same way as spouses - not in fact have the possibility of applying to the court for an equal division of property in the event of dissolution of their relationship. Unlike marriages, couples living in "the cat's paw" have limited capacity, so the courts will not cease in highlighting the need to seek legal advice and make informed decisions about property ownership rights. is also confirmed by a number of stories (sadly without a happy ending for one of the partners), for example: one of the recent cases Kernott v Jones [2010] CWCA Civ578 especially shows how important it is to agree on the ownership of the beginning of a relationship, as well as quick of a solution at the time of separation, in order to avoid future problems:
Mr K and Mrs J in 1985 jointly bought a house for £ 30,000. Both also have equal rights to property, but the Lady J repaid most of the mortgage. Probably did not make any findings as to the financial contribution of each of them does not also agreed that their rights to the property will be on the basis of joint ownership of the total (they have an equal share in the estate) and co-ownership fractional (share in the property may not be equal, depends is the intention of the owners). In other words, they have not made any provision for property rights property held by them. The problems began 17 years after parting ways with Ms. K Mr. J, when the trial court to determine the intentions of both parties have to consider their financial position for almost two decades back.
Furthermore, during the separation of Mr. K has purchased another property and no longer pay the mortgage owed to the previous house. As a consequence, Mrs J paid off at the same time hire for their common home. The court held that the acquisition of property at the time the intention was to have a pair of equal property rights and despite the unequal financial contributions to pay off the mortgage, the parties did not intend to change the proportion of their shares. In the absence of evidence of a change in the intentions of both partners as to their rights of ownership due to the unequal financial contribution, the court held that each of them retains a 50% stake in the property. This decision was obviously a very unfavorable to Ms. J, who gets an equal share of the property as Mr. K, although it has invested in a lot more than her former partner.
Attention note that even if konkubenci are common property owners, and the contribution of one of them far exceeds the partner's contribution, and so, without prior arrangements for the participation of each of them it will have any impact on the division of property. The case between Kernott and Jones is one of those stories that adhere to other couples from trivializing this important duty, which is to agree on the allocation of the acquisition of real estate majątku.W question of whether konkubenci will jointly co-cumulative or fractional part is often overlooked. This is due inter alia to the fact that lawyers providing advice to couples in the administration of assets, often focused on estate planning, regulation of the death rather than such separation. In addition, lawyers often suggest the option of co-ownership of the total, mainly because of its simplicity - after the death of one of the co-owners, his / her interest in the property automatically pass to the other. In the case of the fractional co-ownership, part ownership rights of each party are transferred to their heirs. It is noted that the unequal share of the property are possible only in case of joint ownership of a fraction, so in many cases, this option is much more favorable.
Judge Wall Kernott v Jones pointed out that couples living together, and their legal advisors "must take into account the most unlikely scenario, namely that their relationship could fall apart and that they will argue about it what each of them to be. "[transl. ed] Thus, it is essential that after parting ways as soon as possible to resolve any issues related to property rights. The court has no discretion to decide how to equitably distribute wealth cohabitants has the right to do so in the case of divorce settlement. Otherwise, this situation could present itself in the case of engaged couples who split up before entering into marriage.
Summary: This law is not merciful to people living in concubinage, which is why buying a property jointly, or by entering the house of a partner / ki should be clearly determine which is the share of each partner in the joint property. Only then can we ensure that in case of separation or death of other persons retained by us of ownership will be proportional to our contribution. There is one more option to ensure the equitable distribution of wealth - marriage.

Can Chicken Pox Affect Menstruation

DO need you

You must have heard stories praising Dozens of working with direct clients, you might as well have read some articles and blog posts instructing you how to find firstly a client (meaning: how to make Them Find You), and then, when I do you get hold of them, how to pamper and keep them until death do you part.
You still might not be convinced whether this is a good idea to work directly with a client, thinking that doing business is not your strong point and that you probably will not handle the pressure of actually closing the deal. Well, if that’s the case then perhaps this little story of mine will encourage you to change your mind.
As usual, it all started with a phone call, which already is a success; it means that someone actually found me and got interested enough to dial my number and ask for the service. So, long story short, a lady on the other end of the telephone line asked politely if I could do a translation...hold your breath, this is the best bit – of a coursebook! Yes, I did get excited, yet I managed to stay calm and continue the conversation in a professional manner. Then it turned out that there is a tiny hindrance which could make the whole deal fall through. The thing was that the client had a hard copy of the book and as she lives hundreds of miles away, I could neither see the content of the book nor its volume, which meant that providing a quote was somewhat impossible. At this point, I had some doubts as to whether I will get this job but I offered to do some research and possibly find an online version of the book. I have to say that although I wanted to close the deal, my main drive was to appear as a professional and please the client. I dare to say that this might have been the reason why she suggested that I order the book online and that she would cover all the costs. Ok, no big deal right but bear in mind that the client still wasn’t sure whether she would use my services as she didn’t know the cost of the translation. Moreover, she had also contacted other suppliers for a quote (no surprise here, as this is what a reasonable client would do). After I received the ordered coursebook, I instantly contacted the client with a quote, did a short test translation and there I was happy as a lark with an agreement to do the translation!
Believe me or not but as much as I was happy about getting the job, client’s satisfaction was even more rewarding. And what a lesson this was! What I have learnt is that clients do need us, and so long as we treat them professionally and with care, get in touch, provide them with a quote quickly and listen to their suggestions, they will be ready to go that extra mile in order to use your services . Even if there are some hindrances along the way, they can always be resolved, provided that your ultimate target is not only to quickly cash in on a deal but also to satisfy the client. At the end of the day, you never know when they will need you again.
